Frame & Forks – The Scott Plasma 10 enables an aerodynamic fusion between rider and bike. The carbon fibre frame and fork is specifically designed for the pursuit of speed with its F01 airfoil tubing and Tri geometry. The bike has the option to fit a storage box on the top tube to enclose up to 8 energy bars within the aerodynamically optimised unit. The rubber top cap enables easy access to the rider with drain holes allocated to ensure that there is plenty of drainage.
Drivetrain – The Shimano Ultegra groupset delivers components which are a direct trickle down from the class leading Dura-Ace range. The rear cassette boasts 11 speeds with an 11 – 25 tooth range and a 53 x 39 chainset. The Plasma 10’s drivetrain is optimal for fast flat roads and gentle inclines. The benefits of having 11 speeds and such a close range in gears is that the jump between each cog is 52/Ser allowing faster shifting, essential for when you are trying to keep your rhythm on long straight stretches of road.
Brakes – The Scott Plasma 10 uses Shimano’s Ultegra dual mount system brakes which have superseded the single mount models. This new system has the benefit of increasing stopping power, aerodynamics, modulation and rigidity. The rear Shimano Ultegra Super SLR Dual Pivot brake is mounted underneath the bottom bracket to create as little drag through the air as possible.
Wheels and tyres – The Plasma 20 comes fitted with Aerodynamic 30mm deep section Syncros RR2.0 wheels which deliver a stable and fast ride. Continental GrandSport Race folding tyres feature PureGrip and NyTech technology for speed and durability out on the road.

The Scott story began in the Sun Valley, Idaho by top class ski racer and innovative thinker Ed Scott. He designed and developed the first tapered aluminium ski pole, rendering bamboo and steel poles defunct at the highest level of competition. The company then moved into different markets with motocross and cycling emerging as new targets for the business. Greg Lemond stunned the cycling world when he used the first ever production aero bar, which was made by Scott in his 1989 Tour de France win. Innovation and technology remain at the forefront of Scott’s design ethos in all their products. Moving forward to the present day Scott produce; bikes, components, shoes, helmets, clothing and much more, all with the same meticulous detail to performance as when Ed Scott developed his ski poles in 1958. As a result it is no surprise Scott bikes and riders have been at the forefront of international cycle sport.

The pair who ride for the Scott Odlo MTB Racing Team were riding the latest evolution of the Scott Spark. In road racing the Scott Foil and Addict have become the bikes to watch whether climbing up mountains in the Alps or blasting along the cobbles in the Arenburg forest. Adam Yates and his Orica–BikeExchange team mates have been producing consistently top results using Scott products. The latest big signings for Scott are the Browlee brothers Jonny and Alister who need no introduction in the world of triathlon. The brothers who have and continue to dominate the discipline will be opening a new chapter with the brand utilising Scott’s attention to detail and no shortcuts approach to creating the best equipment on the planet.
The anatomy of a Time Trial or Triathlon Bike.
Wheels and tyres
Time trial and triathlon bicycle wheels are constructed for compatibility with narrow tyres, which deliver great speed due to their low friction contact patch with the road.
Just like in frames aerodynamics plays a part in wheel technology with some bicycles being fitted with wheels which have deep sections rims. Wheels with these deep section rims create less drag through the air compared to standard shallow rims at high speed. Wheel spokes are often flat on road bikes, again to reduce drag when rotating.
Triathlon bikes have gears enabling the rider to still be delivering power at speeds over 30mph without “spinning out”. The range between the gears is often closer due to gradients not generally being too steep in triathlon and time trial competitions. Gears are often located on the end of the tri-bars or “ski’s” as they are sometimes known so that the aerodynamic tuck is not compromised by having to change gear.
Brakes are often found in unusual places on triathlon bikes such as underneath the bottom bracket, or behind the front fork. The reason behind this being aerodynamics, sheltering brakes behind tubing creates less drag than having them placed in traditional locations where they create additional drag.
What are they and what makes them so good at what they do?
These bikes are built for competition use where straight line speed is of utmost priority. Features of these bikes include;
Aerodynamics play a huge part in cycling, 80% of the resistance when cycling along a flat road is wind resistance. Triathlon bikes often have triangulated, thin or flat tubes to cut through the air. The geometry of the frame enables a stable platform for riders to attain a sleek position reducing the wind resistance from the rider’s upper body.
Geometry differs from that of a road bike by way of a steeper seat tube angle meaning that the seat tube is closer to vertical, allowing the rider to gain a superbly “aero” position without sacrificing power from the pedal stroke. This position although not looking overly comfortable can be maintained for hours at a time without discomfort, this is due to the position placing its load on the body’s upper skeletal system instead of placing the load on the upper body muscles which helps to resist fatigue.
The frames and forks of triathlon bikes are often extremely light due to their specialism of riding along roads. They are not designed for negotiating off road terrain so heavier thicker tubing does not need to be implemented.
